What do I put in a best man speech?  What if nobody laughs at my jokes? Do I mention that night in Vegas that no one else knows about?  What if I make a fool of myself in front of all of those people?

These are all thoughts that went through my head when I was asked to be the best man at my brother’s wedding.  Being the best man was not that hard, but having to give the best man speech in front of all of those strangers is what kept me up at night.

As the wedding approached, it was easy to put off.  “It will come to me,” I thought.  The days and weeks went by, and the bachelor party was over and well, lo and behold, the best man speech never seemed to “come to me” as I had anticipated.

The day of the wedding arrived and I had not done one bit of preparation for the best man speech.  I didn’t quite know when I was supposed to give my best man speech, and I wasn’t quite sure of the etiquitte involved.  So, that morning, I frantically wrote down a couple of funny things on a napkin, figuring I could “wing” the rest of it.

Feeling confident that I could ad lib most of the speech based on my napkin notes, we made it through the wedding and headed to the reception.

To calm my nerves, I downed a couple of beers thinking that this would help my big performance in front of all of these people.  One beer led to another, and before you knew it, I was a little more than buzzed.

Still unsure of when I was supposed to stand up and speak, the father of the bride tapped me on the shoulder letting me know that it was probably about the right time to give the best man speech.

“Holy crap!” is pretty much what raced through my head.  It’s time already (as if I didn’t have plenty of time to prepare!)?

I ceremonially dinged the glass and announced that I needed everybody’s attention.  Talk about a rush of nervousness. All eyes in the room were on me, expecting me to make this landmark best man speech!

Well, needless to say, I was so unprepared and nervous, that I think that most of what came out of my mouth was the bride and grooms name and how happy I was for them.  Oh, and I did mention the night in Vegas, and no one was amused with that little story.

If it was even memorable at all, it was because of how boring, offensive and predictable it was. I only wish I had a second chance to get it right.  Unfortunately those second chances don’t come around very often.

So, from my experience, I can tell you that 3 things that you SHOULD NOT DO for a best man speech are:

1.  Not prepare
2.  Drink excessively before giving the speech, and
3.  Mention any unmentionables

Take it from me, be prepared – it’s still embarrassing to this day to even see someone from the wedding, and it could have been totally avoided.

Don’t embarrass yourself like I did.  Do it right from the start, because there are no second chances.
